World Snow Day is an event organized by the FIS (The governing body of international skiing and snowboarding) as part of their “Bring Children to the Snow” campaign, which started back in 2007. The FIS is mostly known for organizing and laying the groundwork for international skiing competitions, such as the Skiing Wolrd Cup, but have been increasing their focus on countering the decline in recreational skiers, especially children, over the years. The goal of World Snow Day is to get as many youngsters as possible on skis and boards and show them just how great it is to be on snow.

For the 8th year in a row, Borovets will take part in celebrating World Snow Day with a variety of events, dedicated to the youngest on the slopes. There will be races, music, seminars, fun and games for the whole family, as well as almost free passes (1lv for kids under 13 years of age). The Bulgarian Mountain Rescue Service will also hold a demonstration on how to be safe in the mountain and Bulgarian ski legend Peter Popangelov will be there to give tips and take pictures with the young skiers. BEFSA  (Bulgarian Extreme & Freeride Ski Association) will also hold a treasure hunt using avalanche beacons, to teach kids how they could find someone that was buried in an avalanche and promote avalanche safety awareness. If you’re in Borovets on the 19th with your kids, make sure to stop by the Sitnyako Ski Area (in front of Hotel Rila) for some fun times.
