March kicks off with a powder day here in Borovets! Wednesday night brought clouds, cold winds and 20-30cm of fresh powder. Even in the resort area it was snowing, rather than raining. By the afternoon the sun had come out again.
In the morning the gondola queue can look quite long, however it moves fast. Even if the line is halfway to the road outside, it takes no more than 30-40 min to get into a gondola. Once at the top you have the option of going to the Yastrebets or Markudjik ski area. The conditions in the Markudjik ski area today were good, with fresh powder everywhere. Even the Markudjik 3 surface lift was working, which gives access to even more freeride terrain. Hopefully this new snow will allow the Markudjik ski area to work even longer, but we’re sure there’s more snow to come.
While the Markudjik ski center was cloudy in the morning, the Yastrebets ski center was sunshine all day. The slopes were groomed prior to opening, so there was no fresh snow on them. Only the Yastrebets 1 ski run was in bad shape by the time I got there. In days with softer weather and fresh snow we advise taking wider skis, as it’s easier in such conditions than with narrow racing skis. The black Fon Fon ski run is left for freeride, but if your not one of the first 30-40 people down it, then there isn’t much point.
The Sitnyakovo ski area was also in good condition, even though it snowed much less lower in the mountain. The lowest ski area is fully equipped with artificial snow canons which gave it a sufficient base layer earlier in the season and is often the best groomed.
