With the end of March comes the beginning of spring skiing here in Borovets. Temperatures are slowly rising, the sun is shinning longer during the day and the beers go down much faster in the Apres-ski. Oddly enough, the forecast is still showing more snow showers in the upper part of the mountain for next week, but we’ll see how that plays out.

The top of the Suhar ski run

All of the lifts are still working, but some of the harder to maintain and less popular ski runs have been closed in the Sitnyakovo ski area. These closed slopes include the black Cherveno Zname piste and Iglika. The Popangelov ski run in the Yastrebets ski center has also been closed during parts of the day due to races taking place. It’s opened once the final athlete has crossed the finish and the nets are removed. Today it opened around 11AM. During the week there are almost no lift lines, however the weekends are different. Many Bulgarians love spring skiing and lift lines can get hectic Saturday and Sunday.

A well groomed Yastrebets

A well groomed Yastrebets

Slope conditions are best in the Yastrebets ski center. The snow cover there is the thickest due to the combined efforts of the snow cannons and natural snowfall throughout the season. It’s highly unlikely that the resort will continue to make new snow, so good thing the base layer is thick. It is also the most popular ski area, so grooming it is always a priority for the resort management. The Markudjik ski center also offers good conditions for skiing, however the slopes are not as well groomed as in Yastrebets. The Markudjik 3 surface lift is still working and gives access to the highest ski run in the resort which shares the same name. Conditions in Sitnyakovo are slushy even before noon, but still fun to ski and enjoy a vacation with friends. The rumor we caught wind of is that the night skiing will be open until this weekend at least, but no official statement has been made.
