Snow Report: January 3rd, 2020

It’s not only a new year but a new decade as well, welcome to 2020! And to start off this new year, Borovets has finally opened most of its ski area. After a warm December, guests can now enjoy all that the slopes have to offer (minus a few runs that are still closed). Best of all, the night skiing is also open every day of the week.

Some fresh snow in the Markudjik Ski Area.

All lifts in the resort are now working, except for the Markudjik 3 and the Rila surface lift, which means that queues are much shorter than the previous week when only a handful of lifts were open. The waiting time for the gondola is about 20 minutes if you’re not there earlier in the morning, while the lift line for the Yastrebetz Express is about 10-15 minutes after 11:00. If you want to skip waiting in line, you should make your way to the Markudjik Ski Area at the top gondola station, where queues are shorter. The forecast for the next week is for softer and sunny weather over the weekend, then a sudden cold front and plenty of snow starting Sunday afternoon. Currently, the forecast is showing about 20cm of fresh snow Sunday through Monday, which is a very welcome change to the relativley dry weather we’ve had since the beginning of the season.

Yastrebets Express is also working.

Skiing conditions are good on the open slopes and will be even better after Sunday’s snowfall. Still closed are the Markudjik 2A & 3, Yastrebets 1 and Sitnyakovo 2 ski runs. These slopes don’t have snowmaking capabilities so they open later in the season most years. The Musala Pathway, which connects the Markudjik Ski Center with the hotel Rila is also still not open, so make sure you’re not caught at the bottom of the Markudjik 2 lift when it closes at the end of the day. The night skiing is now open every day from 18:00 till 21:30 in the Sitnyakovo Ski Center.

The Sitnyakovo Ski Center

The best place to ski today was in the Yastrebets Ski Center, as there the base layer of the pistes is primarily artificial snow, covered with a fresh layer of natural snow. This helps eliminate rocks on the slopes and it stays flat for longer. If you’re a beginner in need of a green run, the best place on sunny days like today is the Suhar ski run, located at the top gondola station. Even though conditions are good, there are still some icy patches located on the slopes which you have to look out for.

About Author

Ever since I started skiing at the age of 6, I knew that the mountains were where I wanted to be as much as possible. Big mountain skiing is the best thing in the world for me, followed by hitting a few laps in the snow park.
