It’s February already and another fantastic week just flew by in Borovets. From snowfall and fog in the first half of the week to sunny bluebird skies throughout the entire weekend – it was certainly a good week to be in Borovets!

Slopes and Lifts

This was probably one of the busiest weeks of the season in Borovets so far. The Bulgarian mid-term school vacation took place and the slopes were lively and full of tourists of all ages. Fortunately for all, all lifts across the resort were operating almost the entire week, except for Thursday when fog made the resort staff close down the Markudjik ski zone and the Yastrebets gondola lift only took tourists up to its middle station.

Let’s make a short review of the week:

Tuesday
It started snowing on Tuesday which made for a fantastic atmosphere during the night skiing that day.

Borovets is one of the few resorts in the country to offer night skiing

Wednesday
Wednesday was rather foggy but totally worth the way up – with more than 30 cm of fresh snow, the Markudjik ski area was a fantastic playground for off-piste skiers and snowboarders looking to shred some fresh snow. The Musala pathway is also now opened for everyone looking to do its 8km of riding all the way down to the resort.

Thursday
The day was rather foggy and the resort had to close down the Markudjik ski area. However, the lower part of the resort was functioning as usual and everyone could enjoy the Martinovi baraki and Sitnykovo slopes.

Weekend
The best was yet to come. On Friday the sun was back and slopes were perfectly groomed for the first day of the weekend ahead. Weather was so good that the resort management decided to extend the hours of operation of the Yastrebets Gondola and Markudjik ski area lifts so everyone could enjoy the views and great skiing condition for an extra hour.

 Weather & Forecast

After a rather cold beginning of the month and a continuation of January’s minus temperatures, February started with cold and snowfall and gradually warmed up for its first sunny and glorious weekend. As mentioned above, the first week of the month started with fog and snowfall but during the weekend the weather was rather warm and felt even springlike.

Thursday was the coldest day of the week with its – 11C but Friday brought sun and positive temperatures so everyone could enjoy the weekend ahead.

Borovets in February

Sun and fresh snow – a proper beginning of February.

Temperatures kept rising throughout the weekend and Saturday (or at least the most of the day) and Sunday were sunny and pleasantly warm.

The good news is that there’s more snowfall in the forecast for this week. It’s supposed to start snowing on Tuesday night and we expect to wake up to at least 25 cm of fresh new snow on Wednesday. Just in time for the upcoming holidays you might be anticipating.

Just 1 hour of walking from the Markudjik 3 drag lift, you’ll find one of the highest located huts in Bulgaria – the Musala hut. Named after the highest peak of Rila mountain and also the highest peak on the Balkans, the hut and the route to it make for a great short adventure away from the hustle and the bustle of the resort.

The hut offer mountain herbs tea and delicious soups so you can have your lunch at the altitude of 2389m while enjoying the view.
