Another week of changing weather conditions here in Borovets. Since our last Snow Report, we’ve gotten some new snow, part of the resort closed due to winds for half a day and, of course, some sunny days in the mix. The forecast is looking good with over 40cm of snowfall from Saturday to Monday and it’s even snowing today. Hopefully, the snow front won’t pass us this time and we’ll get to ski some more powder very soon. Winds will be calm, so we’re not expecting any lifts to close the next week.
All lifts in the resort are working, except for the Markudjk 3 and Iglika surface lifts. Many of the lifts were closed earlier in the week due to heavy winds and fallen trees, but this has been fixed since then. Queues were negligible throughout the day, except for the morning gondola line, which still passes within 20 minutes on a weekday. During the weekend we can expect the lift lines to be much longer, as it’s the last day of the Bulgarian mid-term break.
Skiing conditions were hindered today by fog in the lower parts of the resort. These inversions are not uncommon and the Markudjik Ski Center was nice and sunny until the afternoon. Up top, the slopes were in good conditions, with the Markudjik 2B run open again. Winds kept the Markudjik lift from operating at max speed, at some points it felt like the lift was barely moving. Wednesday through Thursday we’re expecting some more snow, so it’s looking like it’s going to be a powder day. There are some rocks on the slopes, especially on the flat part between the top of the Markudjik 4 seat lift and the Markudjik 1 surface lift. But given the new snow, they probably won’t be there by tomorrow.
Further down the mountain, in the Yastrebets and Sitnyakovo Ski Centers, slope conditions were slushier than higher up. This is in part due to the fog which started around halfway down the Popangelov ski run. Slopes were flat throughout the day, but bad visibility made it very hard to tell what’s in front of you and if the slope is smooth or bumpy. Visibility was about 20-30 meters at times, but a good yellow lens on your goggles can make it more, while a dark lens will do the opposite. The bad news is that they removed the mini boardercross slope at the beginning of the Popangelov ski run, even before it was opened.
