With just about 10 days left of the season, Borovets is still operational and with good skiing conditions (given the typically warmer weather in early April, as opposed to the rest of the winter). But despite the spring settling in, we’re still getting snow in the upper part of the mountain. In other words: “spring skiing mode – ON”.

Markudjik Borovets

Heavy for on the Suhar ski run at the top of the mountain.

Weather and visibility in the mountain have been very diverse over the last week. We’ve had a mix of sunny and cloudy days, some snow and some rain in the lowest parts. The new snow that has fallen is around 10-15cm for the whole week, but snow cover is more than sufficient for the rest of the season. The forecast for next week is for some sunshine around Sunday to Tuesday, then for more snow and rain. Hopefully, by the time he Easter holidays start the clouds will be gone and we’ll be able to finish of the season perfectly.

Conditions in the Markudjik ski center have been snowy and cloudy over the week. Visibility today was especially low at the top of the slopes, but fogs come and go very quickly. Of all of the slopes, only the Markudjik 1 is groomed regularly, but resort management leaves it fresh on the first day after a snowfall. This means that it’s perfect for powder in the morning, but not so great in the afternoon once it’s been skied on all morning. The 2A, 2B and Markudjik 3 runs are officially and the 2A has some grass patches in the middle, making it a bad choice for skiing. The 2B is skiable, but not groomed, while the number 3 run is closed and not groomed. Of the lifts, the first surface lift is open (0 and 1) and the 4 seater lift as well. But when it’s cloudy or foggy, it’s best to stick to the lower two ski centers. The Musalenska ski way, which connects the Markudjik and Sitnyakovo ski centers is closed and has no snow in it’s lower part. It looks good in the beginning, but don’t let this trick you into skiing down it, you’ll be left walking for a long time.

In Yastrebets slope conditions are much better, as this ski center is equipped with snow cannons, which made tons of snow earlier in the season. This gives the slope a thick base layer which will last well past the end of the season. Piste conditions are best in the morning (to no surprise), with the slopes getting slushy after 12-1 o’clock. Good thing is that you don’t have to race to the gondola in the morning to get some perfect turns in, before the slopes turn bad. There are much fewer people in the resort and there’s no need to rush, hurry and so on, corduroy pistes for all. The only closed slope is the Yastrebets 1 run, but only after the exit for the gondola middle station.

Sitnyakovo ski center in the late afternoon

Good news for night skiing fans, the slopes will be open this weekend (Friday through Sunday) due to high demand. Other than this weekend and possibly next weekend, the night skiing is closed. But during the day, skiing conditions are good, again thanks to the artificial snow the cannons made earlier in the season. Almost all slopes are open and groomed, except for the black Cherveno Zname run. Slope conditions are very slushy in the late afternoon, with the snow getting sticky after around 1 o’clock. But the slush affects mostly advanced skiers who want to go fast and many beginners prefer the slushy snow for softer falling. The season is set to close after next weekend’s Easter Holidays.
