It is time again for our weekly snow report from the slopes of Borovets Ski resort. Read on to see how busy, snowy and cold was here this past week.
Overview
This past week was quite busy for the resort and its ski slopes. It was mostly due to the Bulgarian school break (from the 1st to the 5th of February) and to the fact that in the weeks before, the natural snow wasn’t as much making it hard for certain pistes to be open.
What’s New
This week Markudjik 1 (Easy) opened, and as of yesterday – Markudjik 2 (Intermediate, Experts) is open as well. Other newly opened slopes and facilities are: Suhar slope (Beginners), Borokids park (Beginners), Fun Park Borovets (Intermediate), Cherveno zname (Experts only), Cherveno zname lower part (Intermediate) and Yastrebets 1 to Mid Station (1830m).
Slopes and Lift conditions Overview
“Early bird gets the worm” – for this past week can be rephrased as: the early bird skips the queue.
There were significant queues after 10.30 – 11am. Thus it was best to be at the lift line by 8.30am. However the overall waiting time for the lifts was around 15 minutes.
The Gondola lift (goes to Yasterbets) was a sort of an escape from the crowded queues of the other chair lifts. However it was quite windy, foggy and cold on top areas with very low visibility. So due to the strong winds the cabin lift would not operate at times. But fortunately shuttles from Gondola Yastrebets lower station were provided taking you to the Yastrebets Express chair lift.
Cherveno Zname was probably the best slope for this week together with slopes Yastrebets 3, Yastrebets 1 (the open part) and Popangelov. These are much longer ski runs plus the lift waiting time was very little also – therefore a perfect combination for less waiting in line and more skiing on the new and fresh snow.
Thus, our advice would be to get as early as you could to Yastrebets Express Top station or Gondola Top station and enjoy longer skiing time with less crowds!
Night Skiing
Night skiing conditions were also optimal and excellent. Saturday night wasn’t as quite busy as one would expect. Waiting time for the lift was 3 to 5 minutes, although the queues looked huge. The down part was the cold – temperatures dropped down to -15 degrees (especially on Sunday).
Snow and Forecast
In conclusion – it was a great busy week with lots of fresh new snow on the slopes – approximately 20 to 30 cm of new snowfall especially on Friday and during the weekend allowing some more ski facilities to be opened and to be operational. It snowed this morning as well. As far as for the week ahead – light snow showers with very low temperatures for the whole week will be in place. Resort shall be less busy, but with the upcoming half term break in the UK – starting from the weekend (11th of February onwards) more and more people are expected to be on the slopes, on the lifts and in the Resort in general.
