Winter is officially ON in Bulgaria!

This Saturday, December 18th, Borovets opened its slopes for all fans of winter sports. The resort kicked off the new ski season with plenty of snow and fantastic ski conditions. The amount of snow in the area is just staggering and locals say they have not seen that much snow in December in Borovets in the last 10 years. A promising start to the new 2021/2022 ski season. Let’s dive into details:

Snow Cover & Weather

The snow base in Borovets hasn’t looked so good for Christmas in a while and skiers were able to enjoy more than 50sm. of snow at the Markudjik ski area. In the bottom parts on the resort where Sitnyakovo and Martinovi Baraki Express lifts operate, snow base is around 25sm. While Saturday was pretty foggy and offered no to low visibility in the high parts on the resort, Sunday didn’t disappoint and offered fantastic views and bluebird skies.

Borovets Ski Conditions

Lifts & Slopes

Thanks to the fantastic snow conditions, Borovets was able to open all of its slopes during the opening weekend of the season. Closed remained just the Musala ski pathway and some brief parts of Yastrebets 1 slope. All other slopes were perfectly groomed and remained in great condition throughout the opening days. Temperatures were below  0 Celsius degrees both days of the weekend and snow cannons were making artificial snow in some parts of the resort.

Avalanche Danger

The pre-opening days in Borovets were pretty windy in the high parts of the resort and this, combined with the recent heavy snowfalls, creates potential avalanche danger for off-piste skiing. For your own safety, follow the regulations and do not leave the marked ski areas.

Forecast

It kept snowing in Borovets on Monday and Tuesday following the opening of the resort. While there’s no snowfall in the forest for the next few days, temperatures are expected to be pretty low which will preserve current snow and slopes.

COVID Regulations

COVID regulations are in place in Borovets and visitors are obliged to wear face masks on lift queues and inside the gondola lift station and its cabins. For the convenience of guests, the resort has now opened a COVID testing lab venue in Hotel Rila. Learn more about it and explore our Tips on PCR Travel Testing for your Holiday here.
