Snow Report: January 4th, 2019

Happy New Year! For our first report of the year from Borovets, we’ve got some great news. The kind of news that goes like “We got over 50cm of new snow overnight”! The best part is, this isn’t fake news and today was a great day on the mountain. Hopefully, 2019 will be filled with many more days like today.

All lifts on the mountain are currently working, except for the surface lift Markudjik 3, which we think will open soon thanks to all of the new snow. Lift lines were also exceptionally small today, with queues in the Yastrebets and Markudjik Ski Centers less than a minute or two. The forecast at the moment is for another big snowfall around Wednesday night, with smaller snowfalls until then. Let’s all hope that the meteorologists get it right again this time and we get to ski more powder!

Snow conditions were great today in the morning, thanks to the 50+cm of snow that fell overnight and the previous day’s snowfall. There was enough snow to even be able to ski off-piste under the lifts, but we’ll have to wait some more for the bigger terrain and the forests to be skiable, without destroying your skis and knees. Up in the Markudjik Ski Center, we still need some more centimeters for all of the pine trees to be covered and the area to be fully skiable, but you could still find some fresh turns even without being first in the mountain. Today many freeriders opted to climb and walk to the top of the closed Markudjik 3 surface lift and ski down from there.

All of the slopes in the resort are open, but some are intentionally not groomed and left for freeriders only. These are the Fon Fon and Markudjik 2A pistes, which resemble mogul skiing in the afternoon. The only closed slope remains the Musala pathway, which connects the Markudjik and Stinyakovo Ski Centers. Slope conditions were great only for the first few runs, after which they became very choppy. This is normal when it’s been snowing all night, as the snowcats can’t come out and groom the slopes during the middle of the day for safety reasons. Good news is that once it stops snowing, the slopes will be perfectly groomed and will last much longer.

Ever since I started skiing at the age of 6, I knew that the mountains were where I wanted to be as much as possible. Big mountain skiing is the best thing in the world for me, followed by hitting a few laps in the snow park.
